| Beschrijving keerzijde | A complex multi-figured harbour scene depicting Alexander the Great in full military dress standing at the prow of a galley entering a harbour, his body turned to the right while his head looks back over his left shoulder; he holds a spear in one hand and extends his right hand forward in a gesture of command. Two soldiers stand behind him on the same vessel. The acrostolia (prow ornaments) of this galley and an adjacent one each bear a bust of Athena. On a third galley to the right, Athena is shown seated facing right. To the left of the composition, a herald blows a trumpet from atop a tall tower, evoking the mythological landscape of the Hellespont at Abydus. The reverse legend identifies the scene with reference to Leander and the city of Abydus. |
