| Reverse description | A ram stands in profile to the right, rendered in fine relief with carefully detailed fleece and sturdy legs, occupying the central field. The animal is depicted in a static, dignified pose on a plain ground line. The dedicatory legend ΠΟΛΕΜΩΝ ΑΝΕΘΗΚΕ ϹΜΥΡΝΑΙΟΙϹ is distributed around the periphery, recording that Polemon dedicated this issue to the Smyrnaeans. An additional inscription appears in the lower exergue beneath the ground line. The reverse composition reflects the civic and religious character of this exceptional provincial bronze. |
