Æ37 - Gordian III ΕΠΙ ΑΥΡ ΚΛΕΟΠΑΤΟΡΟϹ ΚΑΔΟΗΝΩΝ ΑΡΧ Β

Cadi was a minor Phrygian city whose civic coinage under Gordian III was administered through the conventus at Sardis, one of the judicial districts Rome used to organize the Greek-speaking provinces of Asia Minor. The magistrate named in the legend — Aurelius Kleopatros — held the archonship during what appears to have been his second term, as the Β in the inscription indicates. Local magistrates in Phrygia frequently funded civic bronze issues themselves as a form of euergetism, and the archon's name appearing so prominently reflects that personal financial stake.
