At left, Zeus Laodiceus stands facing right, holding an eagle in his outstretched right hand and a long sceptre in his left. At centre, the emperor Caracalla stands facing left, veiled in the manner of a sacrificing priest, holding a patera in his right hand. At right, Asclepius stands facing left, leaning upon his serpent-entwined staff. The composition reflects the city's neocorate status and its civic religious associations. The reverse legend, distributed in two lines around the field, names the presiding asiarch Lucius Aelius Pigres and asserts Laodicea's title as a city of the imperial cult. |
