Obverse description Laureate and cuirassed bust of Emperor Caracalla facing right, depicted from the front, with the cuirass bearing a prominent gorgoneion (Medusa head) at the centre. The portrait is rendered in the characteristic provincial style of the Ephesian mint, with bold, deeply struck features. The encircling Greek legend names the emperor in the nominative form.

Reverse description A large warship (galley) sailing to the right, depicted with a billowing square sail on a central mast, multiple oars extending from the hull, a curved stern, and a decorated prow. The vessel is rendered with considerable detail, conveying the maritime prestige of Ephesus as a major Aegean port city. The Greek civic legend encircles the type, proclaiming the city's status as thrice neocorate, divided around the central device within a beaded border.
