The outer border bears a continuous Greek legend naming the strategos of equestrian rank, Marcus Aurelius Philetos, and identifying the issuing city. The laurel wreath, with its carefully rendered leaves, serves as the principal decorative frame and is a hallmark of honorific civic coinage from the Smyrnaean mint during the Valerianic period. The use of the neocorate title Γ ΝΕΩΚΟΡΩΝ attests to Smyrna's distinguished status as a three-time temple warden of the imperial cult. |
