| Beschrijving keerzijde | The syncretic deity Thoth-Hermes (Thot-Hermes) depicted as a youthful standing figure facing left, wearing the composite atef crown set upon ram horns, an iconographic attribute drawn from the Egyptian god Thoth. The figure holds a winged caduceus in the left hand and an ibis — the sacred bird of Thoth — perched in the outstretched right hand. Before the deity, a baboon stands facing right, another sacred animal associated with Thoth in the Egyptian tradition. The reverse type reflects the religious syncretism characteristic of Roman Alexandria, equating the Egyptian Thoth with the Greek Hermes, patron deity of the Hermopolite nome. |
