Antioch on the Maeander was a small Carian city whose civic coinage under Trajan Decius falls within a reign defined by catastrophe — the Decian persecution of Christians, a crippling Gothic incursion, and ultimately the emperor's death at Abritus in 251, the first Roman emperor killed in battle by a foreign enemy. Provincial issues from this mint are scarce relative to the larger Conventus cities; Alabanda dominated the administrative district, and Antioch ad Maeandrum produced in comparatively modest volumes throughout the third century.
