Additional information

Stratonicea, a major city in Caria, maintained unusual civic pride in its coinage through named magistrates — the prytanis Leon son of Alkaios named in the legend held a presiding civic office whose appearance on bronze issues was a deliberate assertion of local administrative identity under Roman provincial oversight. The Conventus of Alabanda grouped several Carian cities for judicial and administrative purposes, and Stratonicea's issues from the Severan period reflect a city still negotiating the terms of that arrangement.

The full dative formula naming the prytanis allows die linkage studies to place this issue within a relatively narrow window of Severan-era production.
