Antioch ad Maeandrum was a small Carian city whose civic coinage under Marcus Aurelius reflects the broader administrative reorganization of the Conventus of Alabanda — one of the nine judicial districts Rome used to govern the province of Asia. These large bronze civic issues were not state-mandated; the city petitioned for, and funded, its own coinage, typically to facilitate local market transactions and demonstrate civic prestige to neighboring communities.
The 36mm module places this among the heavier civic bronzes from the conventus, suggesting it was struck for a specific civic occasion rather than routine circulation.
