| Reverse description | Attis recumbent on cushions to the left, his legs ritually bound, holding a patera in the outstretched hand and resting the opposite arm upon a cista mystica; a tree rises behind him to the left. The scene alludes to the Phrygian cult of Attis, which held particular religious significance in the region of Cyzicus. The reverse legend in Greek names the archon Caecilius Alypianus and affirms Cyzicus's status as neokoros. The composition is rendered in the detailed provincial die-cutting style of the Antonine period. |
