Obverse description Youthful draped and cuirassed bust of Commodus, seen from the rear, laureate, facing right with paludamentum visible over the left shoulder. The portrait reflects the co-imperial period under Marcus Aurelius, rendered in the provincial Greek style characteristic of Mysian civic coinage. The obverse legend in Greek characters encircles the bust, identifying the young Caesar.

Additional information

Cyzicus held the title of neokoros — temple warden of the imperial cult — and its civic coinage advertised that status aggressively. The magistrate named in this legend, Kaikilios Alypeianos, is attested on a small cluster of issues, suggesting a relatively brief tenure as archon during the co-rule of Marcus Aurelius and Commodus. Provincial bronze of this module from Cyzicus is notoriously poorly struck due to the oversized flans relative to die coverage, a persistent technical problem at this mint throughout the Antonine period.
