Tripolis on the Maeander — also known as Antoniopolis, a name adopted in honor of the Antonine dynasty — was a minor Lydian city whose civic coinage under Marcus Aurelius coincides precisely with the early years of his reign, when he ruled jointly with Lucius Verus. The city's dual identity in the numismatic record, appearing under both names depending on the issue, has complicated attribution for decades.
At 36mm and nearly 26 grams, this is among the heavier civic bronzes produced in the region, suggesting a deliberate local assertion of prestige during a period when Anatolian cities competed actively through monumental building and coinage alike.
