| Reverse description | Tetrastyle temple with rounded pediment, enclosing a standing cult statue of Aphrodite of Aphrodisias facing right and wearing a kalathos, rendered in the distinctive local hieratic style characteristic of this sanctuary. To the left within or beside the temple precinct, a seated priestess is depicted facing right; to the right, a fountain or basin feature appears, though its identification remains uncertain. The civic ethnic legend ΑΦΡΟΔΕΙϹΙΕΩΝ runs around the field, affirming the issuing authority of the city of Aphrodisias in Caria. The composition reflects the civic pride of Aphrodisias in its celebrated cult of Aphrodite. |
