| Beschrijving keerzijde | Two river gods seated facing one another in a symmetrical composition across the field. At left, the river god Kaystros, personification of the Ephesian river, is depicted holding a reed and the cult statue of Artemis Ephesia, symbolising the city's sacred identity. At right, the river god Neilos (Nilus), personification of the great Egyptian river, holds a cornucopia and a statuette of Sarapis, emblematic of Alexandria. The scene illustrates the Homonoia — the civic concord and alliance — between Ephesus and Alexandria, a recurring theme in the coinage of the Conventus of Ephesus under Gordian III. The reverse legend encircling the composition proclaims this concordance in full. |
