The goddess is flanked symmetrically by the two Nemeses of Smyrna, rendered as standing female figures, forming a balanced tripartite composition emblematic of the civic homonoia (concord) between Philadelphia and Smyrna. The lengthy Greek legend surrounding the field records the names of both neocorate cities and the presiding magistrate, Aurelius Marcus, serving as first archon for the second time. |
