The figure is rendered in a classical style consistent with provincial Pontic bronzes of the Severan and Gordian periods. The Greek civic legend and regnal year inscription appear in the field to the right and around the periphery. The reverse type reflects the strong Dionysiac cult tradition associated with Amisus. |

Amisus retained its status as a free city — ΕΛΕΥΘΕΡΑϹ, "of the free" — under Roman rule, a privilege rooted in its alliance with Pompey following the Third Mithridatic War and formally preserved across subsequent imperial regimes. The city exercised this autonomy partly through its own civic era dating system; ΕΤΟΥϹ ϹΟΒ places this coin in year 272 of the Pontic era, corresponding to 241 AD, a dating convention that itself signals civic pride in unbroken local reckoning.
Gordian III was thirteen when he became emperor. By 241, his father-in-law Timesitheus had assumed effective control of imperial administration.
