| Beschrijving keerzijde | Zeus enthroned to the left, depicted in a stately seated pose with his body draped in himation, extending his right hand forward — possibly holding a thunderbolt, though worn — while his left hand rests upon a tall vertical sceptre. The figure is rendered in the classical Olympian convention familiar to Asian provincial coinage of the Severan era. An eagle may be present beneath or beside the throne, though the surface is heavily encrusted. The Greek civic legend ΕΦΕϹΙΩΝ ΠΡΩΤΩΝ ΑϹΙΑϹ runs around the periphery of the field, asserting Ephesus's preeminent status as first city of Asia. |
