Reverse description Lycurgus, the mythological Thracian king, strides vigorously to the right, raising a double-headed axe (labrys) above his head in preparation to strike. He moves to cut down a grapevine, with a second vine visible behind him, referencing his legendary enmity toward Dionysus and the vine. At his feet, both before and behind, the upper bodies of two partially buried or entangled figures clutch and clasp his legs, impeding his advance. The date regnal legend appears in the field.
