Reverse description Two deities stand facing one another within the field: at left, Asclepius, the god of medicine, stands facing with his weight on a serpent-entwined staff (the asklepion), his body draped in a himation; at right, Hermes, the messenger god, stands nude to the left, holding a purse in his outstretched right hand and a caduceus in his left. The composition is typical of the rich mythological repertoire employed on Pergamene civic bronzes, reflecting the city's prominent religious associations. A multi-line Greek legend in the field and around the periphery names the local magistrate and records Pergamum's prestigious triple neocorate status.
