Nicaea was one of the most politically active minting cities in Bithynia during the Severan period, striking prolifically for Septimius Severus as a way of signaling loyalty to the new dynasty following the chaos of 193 AD — the Year of the Four Emperors. Civic bronzes of this type were produced at local expense and circulated entirely within the region, functioning outside Rome's monetary authority.
At 35mm, this is among the larger module civic issues from Nicaea, a size typically reserved for the most prominent imperial honorees.
