| Beschrijving keerzijde | Homonoia type depicting two cult statues facing one another in a scene of civic concord between Aphrodisias and Ephesus. At left, the xoanon-type cult statue of Artemis of Ephesus stands facing, flanked by a stag at her feet, rendered in the canonical multi-breasted or turreted Ephesian form. At right, the cult statue of Aphrodite of Aphrodisias stands facing left, accompanied by a seated priestess at her feet and what appears to be a fountain or basin. The juxtaposition of the two divine images serves as a powerful visual statement of the homonoia alliance between the two cities, a theme widely employed on Greek Imperial bronze coinage of Asia Minor. The extensive encircling legend names the civic magistrate responsible for the issue. |
