The ΟΜΟΝΟΙΑ ("homonoia") coinage between Magnesia ad Maeandrum and Ephesus belongs to a well-documented phenomenon of civic concord issues in the Greek East, where neighboring cities formalized diplomatic friendship partly to gain prestige and partly to compete for Roman favor. Magnesia and Ephesus were natural rivals — both claimed Artemis as a central civic cult, and the tension between them runs through inscriptions across the Severan period. This coin was almost certainly struck to commemorate a formal reconciliation between the two cities, likely negotiated through the conventus at Miletus.
The 35mm bronze format for homonoia types between these two cities is notably rare in surviving examples.
