Tralles, a prosperous city in the Maeander valley, was one of the most active provincial mints in the Conventus of Ephesus under Gordian III, producing a substantial range of large bronze issues. The magistrate name partially preserved in this coin's legend — Philippos Kentas — appears across a small cluster of dies attributable to a single administrative tenure, making cross-referencing against the Corpus possible with reasonable confidence. Provincial bronzes of this diameter and weight class from Tralles were effectively the backbone of everyday transactional commerce across Lydia during the 240s, when the central Roman silver supply was already degrading under Gordian's military expenditures on the eastern frontier.
