| Reverse description | Architectural scene depicting a frontal view of two distyle or tetrastyle temple façades flanking a central intercolumnar space, with additional temples rendered in perspective on either side; each temple shelters a cult statue within its cella. The left central temple houses the celebrated cult image of Artemis of Ephesus in her characteristic frontal, multi-breasted iconography, while the right central structure contains a standing imperial figure. The composition reflects Ephesus's proud status as neokoros, or temple warden, of the imperial cult and of Artemis. The Greek legend, distributed around the field, records the senatorial decree granting the city these temple honors. |
