Additional information

The homonoia coinage between Sardis and Hypaepa reflects the competitive civic culture of western Anatolia under the Severan dynasty, where neighboring cities negotiated formal concord agreements — partly for prestige, partly to smooth commercial relations along shared trade routes. Hypaepa, a small city in the Cayster valley, rarely appears as an equal partner in such arrangements with a metropolis the size of Sardis, making the joint magistracy inscription here — naming both Aurelius Dionysios and Aurelius Charixenos as strategoi — unusually detailed administrative documentation for a provincial bronze issue.
