Domitian's 14th regnal year in Egypt (year ΙΔ by Alexandrian reckoning) fell just two years before his assassination in 96 AD, when a palace conspiracy involving his own wife Domitia and members of the Praetorian Guard brought the Flavian dynasty to an abrupt end. The Alexandrian mint operated on a closed currency system — provincial bronzes like this one could not legally circulate outside Egypt, which concentrated wear patterns locally and left many surviving examples in surprisingly decent condition relative to their age.
