Teos, the Ionian city on the Aegean coast best known as the birthplace of the lyric poet Anacreon, minted prolifically under Caracalla — a emperor whose co-reign with Septimius Severus and subsequent sole rule generated enormous provincial demand for honorific bronze. The magistrate name ΕΥΤΥΧΟΥϹ embedded in the legend identifies the local strategos responsible for authorizing this issue, one of several named officials attested in the Teian series from this reign.
The Conventus of Smyrna administered civic coinage rights across a clutch of Ionian cities, and Teos punched above its political weight in volume of output during the Severan period.
