| Obverse description | Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust of Emperor Caracalla facing right, depicted from the rear in three-quarter view, a characteristic convention of provincial coinage from Asia Minor. The emperor's strong bearded profile is rendered with considerable detail, the laurel wreath clearly delineated atop the head. The paludamentum and cuirass are visible at the truncation. The encircling Greek legend runs along the outer border of the flan. |

Philadelphia in Lydia — modern Alaşehir in western Turkey — held the title of neokoros, meaning the city had been granted the right to maintain an imperial cult temple, a distinction fiercely competed for among Asian cities and occasionally stripped away as political fortunes shifted. The archon named in the inscription, Claudius Capiton, was a local magistrate whose name appearing on the coin reflects the civic pride embedded in provincial bronze issues of this period — these were as much municipal advertisement as they were money.
