Year 8 of Antoninus Pius in Egypt — rendered as L Η in the regnal dating system the Alexandrian mint used in place of consular or tribunician reckoning — fell during a period of relative administrative calm in the province. The Alexandrian bronze series of this reign is notable for its extraordinary iconographic variety; the mint seems to have operated with unusual latitude in selecting reverse types, producing a wider range of religious and allegorical subjects than almost any comparable provincial series.

The fabric of these large Alexandrian bronzes frequently shows flan cracking at the edges, a known issue with the alloy composition used under Pius.
