| Reverse description | The reverse presents a mythological scene depicting the musical contest of Apollo and Marsyas. To the left, Apollo is seated upon rocks, turned to the right, playing a kithara (lyre). To the right, the satyr Marsyas hangs suspended from a tree, his fate sealed by defeat in the contest. In the field between the two figures, at ground level, a kneeling figure faces left (or right) and appears to be sharpening a knife, in preparation for the flaying of Marsyas. At the base of the tree, a tripod — the emblematic prize of Apolline contest — may be discerned. The regnal date L Η appears in the field. |
