The dedicatory inscription naming Theudianus as strategos places this issue within Smyrna's civic coinage tradition of honoring the magistrate responsible for funding the striking — a public act of euergetism as much as an administrative one. Smyrna was among the most prolific issuers of Greek Imperial bronze in the Antonine period, aggressively using coinage to project civic prestige within the conventus system, where cities competed for Roman recognition and the title of protos of Asia.
