| Obverse description | Bare-headed, draped bust of Marcus Aurelius as Caesar facing left, with short beard and curly hair rendered in the characteristic Antonine style. The portrait displays youthful features consistent with his depiction as heir apparent under Antoninus Pius. The encircling Greek legend ΑΥΡΗΛΙΟϹ ΚΑΙϹΑΡ runs around the periphery of the field. The die engraving reflects the accomplished civic workshop traditions of Smyrna, one of the most prolific and artistically distinguished mints of the Ionian conventus. |

The dedicatory inscription naming the strategos Theoudianos as the official who "set up" this issue for the Smyrnaeans is a rare survival of the bureaucratic machinery behind provincial bronze coinage — most civic issues of Asia Minor record no such dedicant at all. Smyrna was among the wealthiest and most politically ambitious cities of the Ionian coast, and the naming of a local magistrate in full on a coin issue was as much a career monument as a monetary act.
