Reverse description The god Nilus reclines to the left upon the back of a hippopotamus, holding a long reed in one hand and a cornucopia in the other, the latter adorned with a small genius figure. A nilometer, the graduated column used to measure the annual Nile flood, is depicted in the field. The composition is characteristic of Alexandrian civic coinage celebrating the fertility and abundance brought by the Nile. The date regnal legend L ΙΘ (Year 19) appears in the field. The reverse reflects the distinctly Egyptian iconographic program employed by the Alexandrian mint under Roman imperial authority.
