Year 13 of Trajan's reign marked a high point of Roman imperial ambition — the Dacian Wars had concluded with Decebalus's defeat and suicide in 106 AD, and the subsequent influx of Dacian gold fundamentally altered Rome's fiscal position. Alexandrian bronze coinage of this period reflects an active and well-supplied mint, producing large module pieces at volumes consistent with a province generating enormous agricultural and trade revenue for the empire.
The regnal year dating system used at Alexandria — here ΙΓ for year 13 — is what makes these provincials so precisely attributable when Roman imperial dating often leaves a range.
