Hermopolis Magna — the city whose ethnic name appears in this coin's legend — was among the most religiously significant sites in Roman Egypt, home to the cult of Thoth whom the Greeks syncretized with Hermes. The ΕΡΜΟΠΟΛΙΤΗϹ designation marks this as a nome coin, one of a series Alexandria struck to represent Egypt's administrative districts under Trajan.
