Beschrijving voorzijde Laureate bust of Emperor Trajan facing right, depicted nude with an aegis draped over the left shoulder, rendered in the Alexandrian provincial style. The imperial effigy is boldly struck with fine portrait detail, showing strong facial features characteristic of Trajanic coinage. The obverse legend runs around the periphery in Greek characters, identifying the emperor with his full titulature. The aegis, a divine attribute, reinforces the emperor's semi-divine status as portrayed in Egyptian provincial coinage.

Aanvullende informatie

Hermopolis Magna — the city whose ethnic name appears in this coin's legend — was among the most religiously significant sites in Roman Egypt, home to the cult of Thoth whom the Greeks syncretized with Hermes. The ΕΡΜΟΠΟΛΙΤΗϹ designation marks this as a nome coin, one of a series Alexandria struck to represent Egypt's administrative districts under Trajan. L ΙΓ places production in regnal year 13, which corresponds to 109/110 AD, a period when Trajan was focused on the Dacian aftermath and planning his Parthian campaign.
