Reverse description Schematic depiction of the city gate of Augusta Emerita (modern Mérida, Spain), rendered frontally in a bold, architecturally stylized manner typical of Hispano-Roman provincial bronzes. The gate features two large arched doorways at its base, surmounted by a multi-tiered curtain wall with crenellations, flanked by two square towers with battlements at either side. The design is heavily conventionalized, emphasizing the symbolic importance of the colony's monumental entrance. The surrounding Latin legend AVGVSTA EMERITA identifies the issuing city. The flan is irregular and slightly uneven, consistent with hand-struck provincial production.
