| Obverse description | Radiate bust of Emperor Septimius Severus facing right, rendered in the provincial style characteristic of the Bithynian mint at Nicomedia. The radiate crown is depicted with pointed rays emanating from the head. The imperial effigy is accompanied by a Greek legend arranged around the periphery of the flan, identifying the emperor by his full titulature. The surface exhibits significant wear and a golden-brown patina consistent with the coin's age and bronze composition. |

| Additional information |
Nicomedia's title ΝΙΚΟΜΗΔΕΩΝ ΔΙϹ ΝΕΩΚΟΡΩΝ — "twice neokoros" — reflects the city's hard-won status as keeper of two imperial cult temples, a distinction aggressively pursued by Bithynian cities in constant rivalry with Nicaea and Pergamon. Severus granted or confirmed the second neokoreia likely in connection with his eastern campaigns and the political consolidation following his defeat of Pescennius Niger, whose base of support ran through precisely this region.
