| Beschrijving keerzijde | Standing frontal figure of the nude, helmeted hero Achilles, head turned to the left, poising a transverse spear aimed at the fallen figure of Telephos. Telephos, bearded and nude, is shown collapsed on his knees to the right, head turned left, raising a sword in his right hand in a last act of defiance. On the ground between the figures lies a shield, while an upright spear stands to the left of the composition. The mythological scene of Achilles wounding Telephos carries particular civic significance for Pergamum, where the cult of Telephos, legendary founder of the city, was central to local identity. The reverse legend in Greek encircling the scene names the strategos Claudius Nikomedes and commemorates Pergamum's status as holder of the neokorate twice. |
