The Koinon of Lesbos — the island federation centered on Mytilene — struck this issue during the co-reign of Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus, a period when provincial coinages across Asia Minor surged in volume, partly as a response to the costs and disruptions of the Parthian War of 161–166. Verus nominally commanded that campaign, though the actual fighting was directed by his generals. His victorious return prompted a wave of honorific issues across the eastern provinces.
The magistrate name abbreviated in the obverse legend has been tentatively linked to a local strategos, though the full identification remains disputed in the secondary literature.
