Orthosia was a minor Carian coastal settlement whose civic coinage was issued under the administrative umbrella of the Alabanda conventus — one of the judicial districts Rome used to organize the province of Asia. The city minted sporadically, and its bronzes attributable to Hadrian's reign are scarce enough that die links across known specimens have been documented by researchers working the Carian series.
Hadrian visited Asia Minor twice, and his tours prompted numerous provincial cities to issue commemorative civic bronzes. Whether Orthosia's output was tied to an imperial visit or simply to the broader wave of Hadrianic civic enthusiasm across the region is unresolved.
