| Reverse description | The river god Nilus reclines to the left, his nude body supported upon a crocodile, the emblematic creature of the Nile. In his right hand he holds a reed and in his left a cornucopia, both traditional attributes symbolising the river's abundance and fertility. Aquatic plants are rendered in the lower field beneath the principal figures, further evoking the Nilotic setting. The regnal date appears in the field in the form of the Alexandrian year numeral. The composition is characteristic of the Nilotic iconographic tradition prominent on Hadrianic Alexandrian coinage. |
