Year 18 of Hadrian's reign (133–134 AD) coincided with his extended stay in Egypt — his second visit, during which he personally oversaw administrative reforms and presided over the cult of Antinous, his drowned favourite, at the newly founded city of Antinoöpolis. Alexandrian civic bronzes of this regnal year were struck under that charged atmosphere, with the imperial mint at Alexandria unusually prolific. The L ΙΗ date formula, standard to Alexandrian reckoning, anchors this piece precisely within that singular moment of Roman-Egyptian entanglement.
