Year six of Hadrian's reign in Egypt — rendered as L Ϛ in the Alexandrian regnal dating system — coincides with Hadrian's first major tour of the eastern provinces, a journey that fundamentally reshaped imperial policy on provincial administration. The Alexandria mint operated under a distinct monetary system entirely separate from the Roman imperial coinage, issuing tetradrachms and large bronzes denominated locally and not intended for circulation beyond Egypt's borders.
The 34mm bronze series from this mint is notorious for inconsistent flan preparation, producing pieces with ragged edges and uneven surfaces even when dies were fresh.
