Alexandria's civic bronze coinage operated on a regnal year system distinct from Roman imperial reckoning, and L Ζ — year seven of Antoninus Pius — places this piece in 143/144 AD, a period of conspicuous stability in Egypt. The province had been shaken by the major Jewish revolt under Trajan, and Alexandria itself suffered significant population loss and urban destruction in its aftermath; by the reign of Antoninus, two decades of recovery had produced a mint operating with renewed consistency and output.
The Alexandrian mint rarely struck large bronzes in uniform dies, and size variants within the Æ34 class are well documented across the reign.
