At the feet of Sarapis crouches Cerberus, the three-headed guardian of the underworld, an iconographic attribute closely associated with the Serapeum cult. The date regnal legend L Η appears in the field, denoting the eighth year of Antoninus Pius's reign. The composition is characteristic of the elaborate civic religious iconography favored by the Alexandrian mint during the second century AD. |
