The regnal year designation L ΕΝΑΤΟΥ — "year nine" — places this piece firmly in 145/146 AD, a period of administrative stability in Roman Egypt unusual enough to be almost unremarkable. Antoninus Pius never visited Egypt; no emperor between Augustus and Diocletian did. The province was governed as a personal imperial estate, its mint at Alexandria answering directly to the emperor's financial secretariat rather than the Senate, which is why Alexandrian bronzes carry regnal years at all — a dating convention inherited from Ptolemaic practice and retained by Rome precisely because it suited tight fiscal accounting of grain tribute.
