Year 5 of Antoninus Pius's reign — the regnal year encoded in the Greek numeral LΕ — falls squarely in the early Antonine peace, when Alexandria's civic mint was producing some of its most ambitious bronze issues. The Alexandrian mint operated under Roman prefectural oversight but retained considerable latitude in type selection, making these large bronzes a reasonably reliable index of what imagery the provincial administration wanted circulating in Egypt.
At 34mm, this sits among the largest module bronzes the Alexandrian mint regularly produced, a size reserved for prestige issues within the civic series.
