Reverse description A tetrastyle temple with arcuated (curved) lintel, set upon a high podium of four steps, rendered in frontal elevation. Within the intercolumniation stands a cult statue of Ares facing forward, head turned to the left, the deity resting one hand upon a shield and holding a spear in the other. The architectural rendering is typical of the Ionian civic coinage of the mid-third century, emphasizing the local religious significance of the Ares cult at Metropolis. The reverse legend, distributed across the field in three lines, identifies the issuing civic authority.
