Year 12 of Trajan's reign — the Alexandrian regnal dating system placing this squarely in 108/109 AD — coincides with the final stages of the Dacian Wars. Egypt's mint at Alexandria operated under strict imperial oversight, functioning as a closed currency system: coins produced there were not legal tender elsewhere in the empire, and foreign coins brought into Egypt were exchanged at the border for local issues. This isolation makes Alexandrian bronzes unusually traceable as a regional series.
